What comes to mind when you think of the Alaskan wilderness? A grizzly bear, jaws stretched wide to catch a leaping salmon? Katmai National Park in Alaska is the place to see that iconic scene!
Stretching over 6,400 square miles (about the size of Connecticut!), Katmai State Park attracts thousands of hikers, campers and nature-enthusiasts each year. But the park’s bears are by far the biggest draw to the area — literally. An adult grizzly can top 1200 pounds! Want to get up close, but not too close? Brooks Camp in Katmai Park offers the best view from bear-watching stations conveniently (and safely) located above the grizzly's favorite fishing spots.
Katmai is also home to the wildly popular online Fat Bear Week competition, which features local bears as they plump up in preparation for a long winter’s nap.
